New Mexico State Parks sponsor free guided hikes at several state parks on New Year’s Day, giving individuals and families an opportunity to begin the New Year connecting with the great outdoors. Elephant Butte Dam, built in 1916 and normally closed to all traffic, is open to walkers as part of the hikes. For a shorter trip, enter from the Dam overlook. Start from the parking area near the Dirt Dam on Highway 195 if you want a longer walk. Well-behaved leashed pets are welcome. Bring water and snacks, dress appropriately, and enjoy this special opportunity.
